New Holland Consort – Telemann & Bach
The New Holland Consort – Telemann & Bach, music and friendship concert is a performance of favourite Baroque selections by composers J.S. Bach and G.P. Telemann, presented by Act-Belong-Commit.
G.P. Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in the Baroque time period – and is still one of the most prolific composers by today’s standards. His contemporaries also regarded Telemann as one of the leading German composers. His talent was regularly compared to that of both J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel, whose compositional influences were also, of course, well-regarded. Both Bach and Telemann greatly influenced the development of the musical artform and influenced each other’s work.
Interestingly Bach and Telemann were not just close colleagues, but were also close friends. Bach even went as far as to name Telemann the godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel. Thus, their relationship was one of music and friendship!
The concert will comprise inspiring chamber, orchestral and vocal works by these two renowned historical composers. All music will be performed on period instruments using historical temperament, and with historically-informed performance practices.
The concert will be one hour long and will include engaging snippets and stories about the composers Telemann and Bach, as well as an introduction to the historical instruments. Come and find out what that funny, brightly-painted sarcophagus is all about and why it sounds like it does (hint: that’s the harpsichord)!
There’s also an opportunity to ‘meet and greet’ with the musicians post-concert. Enjoy hot tea, coffee or cocoa, a slice of a healthy baked treat and a chat with your favourite musician – whether it be the flautist or one of the strings players! Refreshments are included in the ticket price. Water will also be available free of charge at the event.
