WRITERS PROGRAM

Saturday 13 April 

10-10.45am What is an Elder? 

Dr Marion Kickett  discusses her inspiring work-in-progress: a new collection of powerful, first-person stories from Western Australian First Nations Elders. 

11-11.45am The Noble Salvidge 

Northam novelist and nonfiction author Guy Salvidge talks about the joys and challenges of the writing life, offering a few writing tips along the way.  

LUNCH 

1-1.45pm Singing the Body Electric 

Ballardong Yorga Megan Ugle and Lisa Collyer are two very different poets with distinctive voices and plenty to say. Here, they share some of their poems with York audiences. 

2-2.45pm The Wheatbelt Short Story Competition 

Find out who the big prize winners were in this year’s Wheatbelt Short Story Competition  before hearing them perform and discuss their winning stories. 

Sunday 14 April 

10-10.45am From Paddock to the Page 

Thriller writer Michael Trant still travels to Three Springs to drive tractors “just to keep my hand in,” but these days can more often be found furrowing his brow in concentration as the dreams up his next crime novel. 

11-11.45am The War Nurses 

Wheatbelt-raised author Anthea Hodgson’s latest novel The War Nurses tells the story of her great aunt Minnie and the other young nurses who perished during the Banka Island massacre in World War Two. 

LUNCH 

1-1.45pm Dancing to the Music of Poetry 

In this unique session, York-based dancer Lynn Boon and Perth poet Shey Marque join forces to present a program of original poetry and contemporary dance. 

2-2.45pm A Snapshot of York 

It’s 1917, three years into the Great War, when Edie takes up a teaching post in the small Australian town of York… Sasha Wasley brings her latest historical novel Snapshots from Home to life with a walking tour of York.

YORK’S DARK CORNERS

FRIDAY 13 APRIL at 6pm and 8pm

SATURDAY 14 APRIL at 6pm and 8pm

As the dusk fades, the Night-watchman leads you on a journey through history, enchanting you with tales of former residents. From his lantern, shimmering figures emerge, painting pictures on the walls with light, before dissolving into the night…. The 45-minutes Dark Corners historic walking tour is an outdoor performance where digital footage will be projected onto several key locations and landmarks while you are listening to captivating stories from York’s past. Expect a fully immersive experience which involves wearing “silent disco” headphones along the entire 800 walking metre route. Registration is required for this event due to limited capacity.

JANET MILLETT: LIFE IN BARLADONG

Experience the enchanting tale of Janet Millett’s adventures in Barladong!  Through the eloquent performance of Sarah McNeill and the enchanting melodies of cellist Anna Sarcich, discover the courage and resilience of a pioneering settler. From forging friendships with indigenous communities to championing social justice, Janet’s story is as inspiring as it is timeless. Registration is required for this event due to limited capacity.
