Happy New Year, Happy New Name!

NAME CHANGE ANNOUNCED FOR THE ORGANISATION BEHIND THE YORK FESTIVAL

The incorporated Association YORK ARTS & EVENTS has changed its name to WHEATBELT ARTS & EVENTS.   The name change comes 3 years after the association became incorporated and reflects a wider focus and aim to be more inclusive of the Wheatbelt.

The association was established in 2017 to foster community engagement in arts and cultural activities and to run events such as The York Festival.

WHEATBELT ARTS & EVENTS is a membership based, not-for-profit incorporated association that will continue to deliver the successful York Festival in September / October each year. In addition, for 2021 there is a March Mini-Fest planned over the weekend of 6/7 March.

The March Mini-Fest 2021 is a one weekend teaser for the Sept 2021 main festival to re-engage our local community and reassure followers of the Festival that we are still here, creating collaborative arts and culture experiences and contributing to the economic development of our region. The program of free or heavily subsidised arts and cultural activities will run over the weekend of 6 & 7 March 2021 and on the program so far we have live Music, Poetry Slam competition, Opera on a Truck, Trail Hikes, Bridge of Gratitude, Kid’s Escape Room and more. President Jenny Garroun says “WHEATBELT ARTS & EVENTS aims to make a positive contribution to our region and to bring the arts to the local and wider community’.

“One of our long-term objectives is to establish a Community Arts & Culture Centre, which would offer learning, skills and professional development training for all age groups for things not already being offered in the York area.  This could include printmaking, jewellery, painting, drawing, languages, Noongar culture, exhibitions, perhaps a community garden, courses, workshops and other activities, in addition to hosting arts and cultural events”.

Wheatbelt Arts & Events, Inc. is also working with Regional Development Wheatbelt on a project to stimulate visitation to the Wheatbelt. More news coming soon!

Supporting the establishment of a Community Arts & Culture Centre is just one of the many benefits of becoming a member of WHEATBELT ARTS & EVENTS Inc.  If you are interested in following and/or being involved in the developing arts space in York and the Avon Valley then please like our Facebook page and watch for updates, events and happenings.
