The Gemma Farrell Quintet is Gemma Farrell’s main original project, and was formed when Gemma moved back to Perth in 2013, after six years away.
The group had their debut performance for the Perth Jazz Society at the Perth International Jazz Festival in 2015. The group continued to perform around Perth, playing at the Ellington, the Laneway Lounge, the Moon and Four5Nine, before launching their debut album in June 2018, called “Organised Chaos.”
The album was featured on RTRFM as the local feature album for a week, and the group was nominated for Best Jazz Act at the 2018 WAM awards, where they also performed. The group has performed at the 2021 Perth Festival, Neon Picnic 2021, 2018 and 2019 Perth International Jazz Festival, In The Pines 2019, 2019 King Street Corner Pocket Jazz Festival and the 2018 WAM Awards.
“Organised Chaos” was nominated for Best Instrumental Jazz Album at the 2019 Australian Jazz Bell Awards and the track “Be Like Abraham” was nominated for “Best Jazz Work of the Year.” The group was also nominated for Best Jazz Act at the 2018 and 2019 WAM awards.
In November 2019, the group toured Australia, performing at the Sydney Womens International Jazz Festival, Jazz Music Institute Brisbane and the Jazzlab Melbourne. The group has a lot of new original material and is working towards their second album.
As well as Farrell on Saxophones, the group consists of Sam Hadlow on Trombone, Dan Garner on Guitar, Kate Pass on Bass and Ryan Daunt on the Drums.
