Corner House Jazz Band has six members and plays traditional, foot tapping, jazz. The band has been together, with few personnel changes, for over 40 years. The band plays every Friday at the Jazz Cellar, Mount Hawthorn, a venue very popular with an audience of all ages. The Railway Hotel, where the band plays every Saturday afternoon, is Australia’s longest running jazz venue.
The band’s repertoire ranges from Ellington and Armstrong to Disney and Louis Prima with good old sing-a-long tunes for good measure. If you listen to jazz programmes on the various community radio stations you have probably heard recordings of the band. Corner House Jazz Band has toured overseas, to USA, Malaysia, Japan and New Zealand. It is one of Australia’s longest playing bands and is pleased to be coming back to York, to the Jazz Festival in which the band played an inaugural part, back in 1983.
